Lead paint sampling and reports
Lead in paint, along with the contaminated dust it generates, is a significant source of lead toxicity, and is a serious health risk if ingested or inhaled.
Unfortunately, lead-based paints were common in New Zealand homes until the 1980s. These paints have left a legacy of problems, especially when it comes to repainting and redecorating. Stripping off any paint containing lead can create a serious health hazard for the person doing the job, its occupants, immediate neighbours and children. Young children are most at risk of ingesting lead dust and paint particles as they tend to play outside and put things in their mouths. During paint removal you can expect high dust volumes which elevates the risk of dust and soil contamination.
That’s where we can help. We identify any lead paint and dust that may be present in your building and have samples analysed in an approved laboratory. We’ll provide you with an assessment report that recommends best control strategies and provide recommendations to manage and prevent lead exposure.
It is generally recommended that lead-containing dust be removed, however lead paint may be left in-situ or overpainted if it is in good condition. Lead paint and dust should always be removed prior to any refurbishment or demolition works in order to avoid disturbance and exposure potential. Property Risk NZ can offer advice to home and business owners regarding appropriate removal or control strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions
We take our commitment to health and safety seriously. Our current professional memberships include the following:
Lead builds up permanently in your body over time – it can’t be cleared by the body. It has negative effects on your brain, mood, memory, sleep, nervous system, appetite, metabolism and gastrointestinal system. Given their small size and tendency to put things in their mouth, children are especially at risk of life-long issues developing from lead exposure, including exposure in the womb. If you don’t know for sure that the paint in your building isn’t leaded, find out before disturbing it.
Lead additives in paint were banned in 1979 in New Zealand, but old stocks of paint and painted wood stock could possibly have persisted for a few years after. Red lead paint is still available for specific uses. Homes and buildings built before 1980 are likely to have original lead paint under layers of paint.
You can buy lead paint test kits from hardware stores. Always wear gloves and a respirator before testing. Make sure you scrape down to the bottom layers of paint, closest to the wood, before applying the test.
If you determine your building has lead paint, or if you want a more thorough investigation done by professionals, give Property Risk NZ a call and we can investigate and guide you through remediation or removal options.
Property Risk NZ does not undertake lead paint removal or remediation – to avoid a ‘conflict of interest’ we make sure we have nothing to gain by finding lead in your building. Our services are limited to establishing the scope of lead contamination, then, if necessary, overseeing the removal or remediation process, and ensuring any work is completed to a safe standard through further testing.
We can certainly take care of the whole process for you. If we find failings in your hazard mitigation, emergency or health and safety measures and documentation, we do everything from recommending changes, procuring contractors, overseeing alterations and writing up the documentation afterwards.
Don’t just take our word for it
